The inaugural “Corvette Club Lawn Bowls Challenge” was conducted at the West Lakes Lawn Bowls Club on Saturday 16 th March. We could not have had a better night with the temperature in the high twenties and virtually no wind or rain. Club members started arriving at about 5.30pm some very eager to get on the greens to have a go! The club shouted everyone a pre-bowling BBQ with salads and the bowls club bar was open to provide the appropriate lubrication that is required to learn how to bowl. Once everyone was fed, we were ready to learn how to bowl. We had 5 volunteers from the West Lakes Club to show everyone what to do. What could possibly go wrong!!!!
Everyone had a practice for about 15 minutes and then the group was divided into 8 rinks and teams of two people playing against each other in the first round.
There is a little bit more to learn in lawn bowls as opposed to Bocce or Kegel bowling.
After an initial period of confusion over scoring and who’s turn it was and how to fill out the score card, we were off!
Lawn bowls do not go straight, so the little dot has to be on the inside otherwise they end up on someone else’s rink, this happened quite a bit in the beginning. After the first game the teams were then divided into 2 sections. To be fair the winners of the first game were matched against other winners (cause they were quite good) and the losers against other losers (cause they weren’t quite as good). This gave everyone a chance to win. After the second game a raffle was drawn and the winners and runners up trophies were awarded.
I hope everyone had a great night. It was our first time organising this event and we will make some changes for next year. Thank you to the volunteers who helped from West Lakes Bowls Club and also to Dale (trophy bases) and Chris (the food shopping).
The inaugural bowls challenge winners were :
RUNNERS UP – SILVER BOWL AWARD
Alan Litchfield and Dale Goldsmith
FIRST PLACE – GOLD BOWL AWARD
