The bi-annual club October long weekend at Victor Harbor went ahead despite Covid, covid restrictions and a few hiccups in the motel booking department.
We went with a different motel this year after previous Victor weekends being based at the Apollon. Despite 15 rooms being booked in February the management of the Comfort Inn allowed several rooms to be booked out from under us via internet sites. 3 couples graciously agreed to stay at the Apollon and we are grateful to them.
Friday started with the usual drizzle of rain as the weather realised it was Corvette weekend. We had about 12 cars arrive at the Maccas South Road, but getting in and out was a challenge, turns out not only was it a long weekend but school holidays too !
Anyway, we managed to roar off down the expressway, until some funny noises had a certain white C4 stopping - but at least we had gone more than 10 kms. RAA to the rescue!
The Corvette caravan was off and picked up the cars waiting down south on the side of the road.
We arrived at the Comfort Inn, which is situated quite nicely in between a Hotel and a liquor store.
Friday night was dinner at the nearby Hotel Victor. In true Victor style we were kicked out at 9.30.
Saturday morning was bright and sunny. We started our Poker game for the weekend with each car getting a card. I organised the route to our first stop at Waitpinga beach in a straight line, but it was a lost cause against the Corvette Club Curse, U turns and lost vehicles keeping the Sgt at Arms busy.
Photo opportunity and soaking up the sunlight and Feng Shui aligned everyone's Shakra at Waitpinga Beach and we were off again.
Lunch was at the very picturesque Forktree Brewing up on the hill at Carrickalinga.
Upon exiting to head off to the dam for more pictures and Feng Shui - it was apparent that another white C4's Shakra wasn't aligned with its ignition barrel tumblers and refused to operate - RAA to the rescue again!
Upon arrival back at Victor people got to relax and chat and do some walking around the town and Granite Island. Saturday night was a short walk down to the historic Anchorage Hotel for a nice dinner and complimentary drinks on the tables.
The weather must have realised it was still Corvette weekend and Sunday morning was rain and dark clouds rolling in. But at least we had run out of white C4's!
First run of the day was up to Mt Compass and turn right, accompanied by the usual U turn shenanigans. Again, Sgt Pete was rounding them up like an old sheep dog and getting them back in line. We rolled into Goolwa and first stop was the Barrages that control the Murray River before it enters the sea. It was cold and windy for the walk out on the Barrage but everyone was surprised to find a family of seals living out there. Then it was off to the Islanders Tavern on Hindmarsh Island and some extra club visitors joining us for lunch.
Next run was up to Strathalbyn and a visit to Gilberts Motor Museum. It turns out there is some of Rod Primes old stuff in there, including a racing suit. There were many chuckles as Rod was trying to convince everyone that he used to fit in that suit!
Before going out for dinner it was time to deal out the 5th card to everyone and Ian was declared the winner with an unbeatable hand of three 8's ! A C3 owner is probably the fitting recipient of the Supercheap Auto voucher.
Sunday night was next door to the motel at Nino's Italian restaurant, we had our own space upstairs on the balcony with some good food, wine and exaggerated stories. The only downside was we had to listen to Gary go on about the Woodville woodpeckers, or whatever they are called now, winning a footy game.
Monday morning was more rain as we checked out and walked across the road to Primo's for some brunch before everyone headed home.
A good long weekend was had by all, except the black C4 who's wipers fell off on the way home, but like I said we had run out of white ones. |
